Roundtable: Summer sun protection
by Kate Lee
With the days getting longer and the weather getting warmer, there's an increased likelihood for alfresco brunches, pool-hopping, beach weekends, and sunbathing. We asked some readers how they protect their skin against the sun.
I use Eucerin Daily Protective Face Lotion as my primer. It's lightweight, is great under makeup, and works better than any makeup primer I've used. Also, a tip: go to the dermatologist once a year if your insurance permits to get your annual skin exam.
Every day I wear moisturizer with SPF, either IMAGE Skincare Prevention+ Daily Matte Moisturizer SPF 32 or Perricone MD Photo Plasma Broad Spectrum Moisturizer SPF 30 on my face and neck. Since I work a desk job my sun exposure Mon-Fri is limited (I'm busy!). But, on weekends if I know I am going to be outside, I either put on sunscreen before I leave the house or use a travel-sized SPF 50 in my purse if all of a sudden I find myself at an outdoor outlet mall for like 5+ hours.
I live by this tweet.
I have a system. Daily, I use Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer with Sunscreen SPF 50. If I'm out in the sun for activities I use that on my face and BullFrog Blocks UVA Rays Sunscreen Gel SPF 30 on my body and re-apply every 2 hours. The BullFrog sunscreen is great for sweat and being in the water. If I want to seriously get tan, I use Coppertone Tanning Dry Oil C-Spray SPF 15 on my body and Banana Boat Sport Performance Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 on my face. I've also heard great things about Trader Joe's Nourish Spray Sunscreen SPF 50.
I put sunscreen on all the white parts.
I hide from all outdoor activity using a Netflix and Chill approach. Actually, I just use the Neutrogena Healthy Defense Daily Moisturizer with Sunscreen SPF 50, which doesn't cause me to break out. I drink plenty of water to make sure my skin is hydrated. I also love the Evian Mineral Water Spray!
I mix my Banana Boat Sun Comfort Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 with my everyday moisturizer: St. Ives Timeless Skin Collagen Elastin Moisturizer. I also wear lip balm with SPF, like Maybelline Baby Lips (in Quenched) or a lip gloss with SPF like Neutrogena MoistureShine Lip Soother (in Shine 30). I mix those with lipstick if I want colored lips.
I'm Black, I don't burn. Just kidding, my foundation has SPF in it. I use Benefit Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow Liquid Foundation SPF 25.
